What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is a recognised health profession in South Africa, registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). It uses music-based interventions and other creative arts to address emotional, cognitive, physical, and social needs.

Therapy processes may involve activities such as creating music, listening to music, art, movement, and verbal processing. It is beneficial for individuals across all age groups, including infants, children, adults, and older adults. Music therapy is practiced in various settings, such as schools, hospitals, mental health facilities, and rehabilitation centres.

Verbal expression is often difficult for many people. This may be due to mental health challenges, disabilities, or other conditions. The creative arts offer a non-verbal avenue for self-expression, often circumventing speech and cognitive barriers.

No prior musical experience is needed for one to benefit from music therapy
