My Journey to Music Therapy

I have pictures of myself as a baby sitting at the piano, before I could even walk. For as long as I can remember, I would sit in front of the piano, recreating familiar songs and composing little melodies. This never changed, as the connection that I had with music ran deep within me. Music became the medium through which I expressed myself and processed emotions relating to a myriad of life events. Early on, I became aware of the impact that music had, not only on myself, but on everyone else.

Throughout my school career, music not only brought me immense joy, but it also became a part of my identity.

Naturally, I went on to study a BMus degree with a focus on jazz voice and psychology, still fascinated by how people were influenced by music in so many ways.

When I heard about music therapy, there was no doubt in my mind that this was my calling.

My Ethos

The idea that the client knows themselves best is central to my work. I genuinely believe that clients have what they need to develop and heal in their own way, even though I have extensive training and a foundation in evidence-based knowledge. It is my role as the therapist to facilitate this process while also using the arts. By adopting a client-centred and strengths-based approach, I seek to identify each person’s inner strengths and resources.

So often, I have seen how music can provide different experiences and perspectives of ourselves. By using music, I aim to assist clients on their journeys of discovery and expression.
